Make It Magic: How to Celebrate Easter at Home

With four days off, glorious Autumn weather, and everyone you love under one roof, Easter is the long weekend that was made for home. Here's how to make the most of every moment of it.

Easter is one of those rare long weekends that asks nothing of you except to slow down and enjoy it. No big obligations, no formal dress code. Just four days to eat well, be together, and let the house fill up with the kind of noise and warmth that makes a home feel exactly what it's supposed to be.

START WITH HOT CROSS BUNS (OBVIOUSLY)

Whether you're a purist who makes them from scratch or a realist who grabs the best ones from your local bakery, hot cross buns set the tone for the whole weekend. Toast them, butter them generously, and eat them at the kitchen bench while the rest of the house slowly wakes up. It's a small ritual that’s big on family impact.

Start the long weekend with hot cross buns, whether homemade or from your local bakery, creating a simple family ritual that brings warmth to the kitchen.

EGG DECORATING: THE MAIN EVENT

Clear the table, lay down some newspaper, and let creativity take over. Hard-boiled eggs work well for younger kids, they’re safe to handle and satisfying to decorate. Older children (and adults, let's be honest) can try blown eggs for something more delicate and display-worthy.

Keep a range of tools on hand: watercolour paints, metallic markers, rubber bands for patterns. Set up a drying rack and display the results in a straw basket, an instant Easter centrepiece.

THE HUNT

A well-planned Easter egg hunt is one of those rare activities that works for almost every age. For little ones, make sure the eggs aren't too well hidden and let the discovery feel like a genuine adventure. For older kids, introduce clues; a simple riddle trail around the house and backyard raises the stakes considerably.

Mix it up with a few modern touches: assign each child a colour so there's no competitive scrambling, hide a "golden egg" with a special prize, and don't forget the chocolate Bilby alongside the traditional chocolate bunny — a great reminder of Australia’s wonderful native wildlife.

MAKE THE MOST OF THE ALFRESCO

If you've got an alfresco or outdoor dining space, this is its moment. Dress the table with warm, Autumn-toned linen, some fresh flowers from the garden, and let lunch stretch into the late afternoon the way a good Easter lunch should.

And for families with younger kids: there's a reason camping in the backyard has become an Easter tradition in its own right. Four days at home, mild autumn nights, and a tent pitched on the lawn equals an adventure that costs nothing and generates priceless memories.

Celebrate Easter with a traditional roast lunch, where lamb, shared moments and a beautifully set table bring everyone together at home.

SIT DOWN FOR THE ROAST

The centrepiece of an Australian Easter lunch is the roast — lamb, traditionally, though a ham or chicken will do the job just as well. It's the meal that pulls everyone to the table, that fills the house with a smell that's almost indistinguishable from the feeling of being home. Set the dining table properly. Use the good plates. Light a candle. Easter lunch deserves it.

COLOUR IN THE AFTERNOON

When the meal is done and the little ones need something to do while the adults linger, our free downloadable Easter colouring activity is ready to go. Printed out and spread across the table, it's the kind of simple thing that buys everyone a peaceful half hour. And the finished pages make surprisingly good fridge art.

The best Easters aren't the elaborate ones. They're the ones where the house smells like something good, the backyard gets used properly, and everyone stays a little longer than they planned. This year make it one to remember.
