Top 5 pots and planters for inside and out

Blog Post

If you’re looking to join the indoor plant craze by adding a hint of green to your place, don’t just think foliage type. Styling with plants means you need to accessorise too! We explore our top 5 pots and planter ideas to get you started and share some of our display home inspiration!

1.      Paper love
Paper bag style planters are definitely the buzz at the moment. They can really dress up even the most basic plant and provide a chic looking cover up for an ugly pot. This accessory has so many uses, they look great with almost anything in them, and the best thing yet – they are washable! We are mad for the Uashama paper bags especially the rose gold metallic version for a very on trend industrial theme, perfect for the Christmas tree!

2.      Standing tall
Plant stands create an elegant and vertical statement for your room, providing height to your smaller plant varieties. Move them around to treat your plants to the gentle morning sun, or from room to room for a versatile look. Using a simple and subtle stand allows the plant to be the shining hero without adding another heavy furniture piece. We think the Kmart Copper Stands are the perfect accessory for a sleek and minimal look.

And then there’s the moss ball plants, or kokedama for those wanting to sound exotic. While you can have a go at making your own with a bit of sphagnum moss and coloured twine, it’s a messy exercise. Go to the experts at Mister Moss, perfect as a house warming gift.

3.      DIY
There’s always one at every party, the clever DIYer! And why not, we all wish we could be that handy. Making your own pots and planters means you can change up your style as quickly as you can finish a project and you always have a good stash of presents to give to friends. Use up old cushions or raid the remnants bin at the local fabric store (or even Ikea!) and make your own fabric planter. Bit like our favourite paper bag versions, check out these steps by Craft Hunter.

If you were born in the peace loving ‘70s, then chances are you have created one of these macramé beauties before. Start channelling your home economics teacher because they are back in vogue, or study up through this Houzz Ideabook and create some individual styles.

4.      Alfresco style
With our love of inside-out living in Australia, our alfresco spaces shouldn’t miss out on some planter style. Concrete planters are popular for outdoors, and while they can be an investment piece, they do last a long time and even gain more character as they age. Try combining different sizes in similar shapes for an unstructured and informal look.

We have to include the new innovation in outdoor pot style with the very popular vertical garden. Whether it be a complete system sourced from Bunnings or bespoke arrangement with a built in watering system, these living wall systems can add a calming (oxygen rich?) and tranquil effect to courtyards, alfrescos and backyards. Think vintage crates, metal paint pots or even reclaimed pallets for a really upcycled rustic style.
